Today I thought I’d spotlight an underrated film and one my favorites from my DVD library. “Guarding Tess” is the story of a Secret Service Agent assigned to guard a very difficult former First Lady. Nicolas Cage is the protector and Shirley McLaine is the protectee. And frankly its one of the few movies where I don’t hate them both with unadulterated passion.
Cage wants to leave this post as soon as his tour is over and he thinks that she wants him gone, too. So, how surprised is he when he finds out she made a call the sitting President to have him assigned back to her detail? Very. And angry. The banter between the two is classic and their near silent standoff in a car when she refuses to follow protocol is hilarious.
But what I love most about this movie is that there’s a plot twist that I didn’t see coming that changes the nature of their relationship in such a dramatic way you can’t help but be touched by it.
There’s not a lot of special effects, not a lot of surround-sound moments but “Guarding Tess” is a little movie that deserves more attention than it got. Rent it today!
