Idol Top 10

Just in case you’re wondering, I write this as I watch . . . so these are my raw and unedited thoughts . . .

Siobhan Magnus – “Through the Fire” – Singing through her nose a bit at the front. Some bad notes in there. Seriously bad ones. I think she’s better than this performance shows, but ALL the notes matter, not just the big ones. Very disappointing. Grade: D

This nonsense of going backstage and embarrassing these contestants because they need to fill 2 hours is baloney. That wasn’t nice to do that to Sibohan. But Big Mike got himself some more votes by being the one to comfort him.

Casey James – “Hold On, I’m Coming” – I love this song and he did it well. He’s quite competent, but I just don’t see a major star personality from him. The guitar at the end bumped it up for me a bit on the grade. Grade: B+

Michael Lynche – “Ready for Love” – Very good. He’s the best guy on this show, by far, and seems genuinely confident yet likeable. Good for him. Grade: A

Didi Benami – “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted?” – Old fashioned and boring. Some bad notes. I don’t understand the Didi hate that I hear from several of my friends, but she isn’t doing anything to help her cause the last couple of weeks. And wow, that ending was pure desperation. Grade: D

Did you see the look on Crystal’s face? She was concerned about Didi… see! She is human!

Tim Urban – “Sweet Love” – Usher is a great mentor. But trying to get Tim Urban to display real emotion is like asking C3PO to stop being a robot. He’s too busy “having fun.” Blech. Vanilla, soul-less, and fake. Please stop voting for him, America. For the first time ever, Randy actually gave actual musical critique that was right and good! Wow, Simon was on fire!! That’s awesome. Grade: D

Andrew Garcia – “Forever” – This was his best performance. He’s still not great, but he’s proven that he does deserve to be on this season of the show at least. (Of course, that’s not saying much). Grade: C+

Katie Stevens – “Chain of Fools” – Personality should consist more of just shaking your head back and forth in a “sassy” way. Voice was pretty good. Just not ready for this level yet. Grade: C

Lee Dwyze – “Treat Her Like a Lady” – This is his best by far. He doesn’t look as frightened. And he sang on key! He even smiled at one point! Good for him. I haven’t liked him, but he turned me tonight. Grade: A

Crystal Bowersox – “Midnight Train to Georgia” – I’m a piano guy, as you probably know, so I loved this. Problem is, she kept looking at her hands because she’s not a great pianist. Yet. But she will be. It was nice to see her get up and smile and sing it like a star. She’s great, no matter if she’s the favorite or not. You can’t argue with true raw ability and talent. Grade: A+

Aaron Kelly – “Ain’t No Sunshine” – I love this kid. He’s wise beyond his years musically and he’s got great instincts. He should come in third this year and he should have a tremendous career in country music based on his Idol exposure. A bit nasally at the front, like Siobhan. Nailed it pretty good at the end, though. Grade: B+

Say goodbye to Didi . . .see you tomorrow.
