Its rare that a movie makes me laugh this hard, while maintaining the Barbara standard. What’s that? The Barbara standard is will my mother enjoy it and not cringe at the language or content? Paul Blart: Mall Cop passes the test, I think.
This is a sweet movie, filled with big laughs as well as subtle awkward moments that are now becoming the norm in most comedies. Kevin James plays the same character he always plays with a bit of a twist; the actress playing his daughter does an amazing job conveying emotion and sincerity. Everyone does what you’d expect them to do here and its all very paint by the numbers . . . but the movie doesn’t pretend to be anything but that. Its an Adam Sandler production and it has all the qualities of an Adam Sandler movie minus Adam Sandler (though it does feature some of his regular crew in smaller roles).
I left the theater with a smile on my face and that’s all I asked for tonight.
